Wetherspoons pubs close to new low due to pandemic

27.01.2023

The chain announced last year that it would sell nearly 40 of its pubs due to the combined impact of the pandemic and soaring prices.

More closures would be on the cards in November after sales fell by 1.1 per cent.

11 of the pubs have been sold off, with them closing their doors gradually closing their doors for good.

Some venues closing include Moon on the Square in Basildon and Wild Rose in Bootle.

Tim Martin, the boss, said he remained cautiously optimistic about Wetherspoons future.

Martin said: "The aftermath of the Pandemic and Lockdown restrictions have been much more difficult than anyone thought.

That is the picture for the whole pub and restaurant industry. People thought that after the lock down there would be a boom in people suffering from cabin fever, but instead it has been the opposite situation as people have been in the habit of staying in.

Sales are down on 2019 because of that. Things are improving now, but it is slow. Wetherspoon opened its doors in North London in 1979.
