Russian company completes 2022 nuclear fuel supply program on time

31.01.2023

The Russian company TVEL, a subsidiary of Rosatom, has completed its nuclear fuel supply program for 2022 on time. The Russian nuclear company, which supplies fuel for the Kozloduy NPP, wrote in a letter to Energy Minister Rosen Hristov, as quoted by BTA.

With the letter, Moscow responds to the statement made by Minister Hristov in a television interview on December 22, 2022, in which he commented on the newly signed contract with the US corporation Westinghouse for the licensing and implementation of an alternative type of nuclear fuel for unit 5 of the Kozloduy NPP. The Russian company's supplies could be suspended due to difficulties caused by Russia's war in Ukraine, according to the minister.

The Russian company wrote that they were not informed by the Bulgarian side about the inclusion of another supplier and that mixing different nuclear fuels posed risks for nuclear safety.
