China urges US to adhere to one-China principle, handle Taiwan issues

PHOTO VCG BEIJING - China urges relevant US officials to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques and to handle Taiwan related issues, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said on Thursday.

US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly said that China can't tell him where he can go when responding to a question from reporters about his potential trip to Taiwan this spring.

In response to McCarthy's remarks, spokesperson Mao Ning told a daily press briefing that China urges the relevant people in the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three Chinese-US joint communiques, respect the basic norms in international relations, and handle Taiwan-related issues prudently and properly.

The spokesperson also urged them to stop interfering in China's internal affairs and refrain from doing things that would undermine China-US relations or peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits.

She said that China will continue to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

When asked for comments on the meeting between Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen and Phil Davidson, former head of US Indo-Pacific Command, earlier in the day, Mao reiterated China's position on the Taiwan question.

Mao said that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and that resolving the Taiwan question must be decided by the Chinese.

Mao pointed out that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in the Taiwan Strait are responsible for the tensions across the Taiwan Strait, and some people in the United States who intend to use Taiwan to contain China.

The spokesman says that Taiwan independence', peace are irreconcilable.
