Flood-hit Pakistanis rebuild their shop on sturdy foundations

03.02.2023

It has been nearly five months since floodwaters swept away Muhammad Fazal's general store in southern Pakistan. He is rebuilding his shop on taller, sturdier foundations, hoping that he will be prepared for the next floods that hit his village.

Fazal, 28, who borrowed money for construction work from a nonprofit organization, counts himself among the lucky ones - despite his 400,000 rupee loss of $1,495 - as many Pakistanis struggle to recover from last year's devastation.

He said in his village of Gozo in Dadu, a densely populated district of Sindh province, which was hard hit by the devastating nationwide floods, I have raised the level of my shop and I am rebuilding it better.
