07.02.2023

Apple Inc. is working on full reverse wireless charging support for iPhones despite some engineering roadblocks.

What Happened: Apple planned to introduce reverse wireless charging, also known as bilateral wireless charging, with the iPhone 14 Pro, but didn't do so because of unforeseeable engineering delays.

Sources familiar with the matter told 9 To 5 Mac that the company engineers are pressing ahead with the development.

The iPhone 12 lineup included bi-wire wireless charging hardware, according to FCC filings. The feature was inactive.

The feature was in the works since the iPhone 11 lineup was launched in 2019. Sources familiar with the development said it has proved to be a significant challenge considering the concerns surrounding heat management and charging speeds.

The report noted that the bilateral wireless charging is a cutting-edge technology that would allow users to recharge their iPhones with a wireless charger and allow them to use their phones to recharge an accessory such as an Airpod.

Users of Apple can charge their AirPods by placing them on the back of their iPhones once this feature is introduced.

Apple is expected to comply with the EU mandate on requiring new electronic devices to have USB-C ports from next year, apart from the reverse wireless charging feature.

While Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, said the company would adhere to the mandate, prominent tech - YouTuber Marques Brownlee said the tech giant might find a workaround.
