Japan earthquake-ravaged village donates $3.8 million of gold bars

An individual who expressed hope that the proceeds from their sale would be spent for the good of the community, devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 2011, has donated 500 million $3.8 million of gold bars to a village in northeastern Japan.

The Tanohata municipality in Iwate Prefecture said it was considering using the proceeds from the sale of the 120 bars, weighing 60 kilograms, for child-rearing support and the rebuilding of the decades-old village office. The donor has asked not to be identified.

A resident of Japan with ties to the coastal village predates the 2011 disaster, a resident of the city approached Mayor Yasushi Sasaki about the donation in the fall of last year.
