YouTube TV doubles prices to $72.99 a month amid competition on streaming

16.03.2023

The platform said on Thursday that the month's price will be adjusted from $64.99 month to $72.99 month after nearly 3 years. As content costs increase and we continue to invest in the quality of our service, we are updating our price to keep you up to date with the best possible service. In June 2020, YouTube TV increased its base plan's cost by 30% to $64.99 a month, up from the previous price of $50. When it was launched in 2017, YouTube TV charged a monthly fee of just $35.

The news comes just two days after the platform announced it is testing a new multiview feature that will allow sports fans to stream up to four pre-selected games at once.

There is a multiview option that highlights the heavy focus on sports on YouTube as competition in the streaming space increases. The service won the exclusive rights to NFL Sunday Ticket late last year, beating out the streaming giant Apple AAPL, which backed out of the negotiations.

Sunday Ticket, which makes out-of-market games available to fans nationwide, will be available as an add-on package on YouTube TV and standalone a-la carte on YouTube Primetime Channels starting with the 2023 NFL season. The deal's terms were not disclosed.

Tim Nollen, an analyst at Macquarie Group, told Yahoo Finance Live at the time that the Sunday Ticket package was not a profitable service for DirecTV, because it was an extremely expensive package of content.

They're competitive, but they're growing, and more sports could help to draw more users to those platforms over time. How will they make enough money to justify double or whatever price increase? You'd think they'd have to double the price for the streaming services. Alexandra Canal is a senior entertainment and media reporter at Yahoo Finance.
