One dead, several missing after boat capsizes in Japan river

KAMEOKA, Kyoto - A cruise boat with around 30 people aboard capsized after running aground in the Hozu River in this west Japan city on March 28, leaving at least one person dead. Rescue workers are searching for others after reports that several people were swept away.

At around 11: 30 a.m., a local fire department received an emergency call saying a boat had run aground along the Hozu River in Kameoka, Kyoto Prefecture. About 30 people including passengers and crew were aboard the vessel before it capsized.

A 51-year-old boat operator who was rescued while in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest has been confirmed dead.

The safety of 25 passengers, including three children and two boat operators, has been confirmed by police, the fire department, and other sources. One other boat operator is still missing.

The roughly 16 kilometer boat cruise starts at a quay in Kameoka and travels down the river to Arashiyama in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward. The capsized boat departed at around 10: 40 a.m. the same day and ran aground about a little over 5 kilometers downstream.
