Only fire-ravaged supermarket in north Norfolk to reopen

01.04.2023

A town's only supermarket that was destroyed by fire almost three years ago is due to reopen.

On June 20th, 2020, a budgen in Holt, north Norfolk, was gutted after flames were sparked due to an electrical fault.

A temporary replacement was set up during the epidemic and the store had been described as a lifeline.

CT Baker Group owners said they were thrilled to open the new store at 10: 00 BST.

Sandra Taylor-Meeds, store manager, said: "We can't wait to serve the people of Holt in our new surroundings.

This shop is an important asset for the residents here and the launch of this new building is sure to make a real difference. The original supermarket had been in the town for 35 years and had a post office and launderette.

It was empty at the time of the blaze and no-one was hurt.

CT Baker Group said there were a number of challenges during the rebuilding because of the war in Ukraine and the Suez Canal blockade.

Some 10 miles and 16 km away, smoke could be seen at the time of the fire.

CT Baker Group said that the building of the new store faced many challenges due to global events such as the war in Ukraine, the availability of raw materials, and the Suez Canal blockade, which has resulted in supply disruption.

Despite these challenges, the construction team remained committed and used many local companies and workers.
