Bodies of 4 recovered from sunken Italian boat

The bodies of four people have been recovered from Lake Maggiore, northern Italy, after a tourist boat capsized on Sunday evening.

The last body has been recovered at 8 a.m. local time 2 a.m. local time. ET said the fire service, Vigili del Fuoco, was in charge of the search and rescue operation.

The victims include two Italian nationals, one Israeli and one Russian, CNN affiliate Sky Tg 24 reported Monday, citing the local prosecutor. The victims were a couple of men and two women.

The 16 meter, 52-foot houseboat had been carrying 24 people when it encountered difficulties during a violent storm and capsized shortly before 7: 30 p.m. local time. On Sunday night, sky Tg 24 reported that there were no reports of any casualties.

There were 22 tourists aboard, including British passengers and two crew members, according to Sky Tg 24.

The fire and rescue service said 20 people were rescued after the boat capsized.

Some of the 20 survivors managed to swim to the shore, Sky Tg 24 reported, adding that although five were taken to the hospital, no survivors had sustained any serious injuries.

The fire and rescue service said divers and a helicopter were used as part of the search and rescue operation.

One of the dead were the captain of the boat's girlfriend, who was found within the wreckage of the boat, Sky Tg 24 said.

The search and rescue of the sunken boat is still under way.

In a statement, the UK Foreign Commonwealth Development Office said it is in contact with local authorities in Italy after a boat accident and are ready to provide consular assistance to any British nationals involved. Italy and Switzerland share a common destination, Lake Maggiore, which attracts tourists.

Passengers were celebrating a birthday party when the boat capsized at the Italian towns of Lisanza and Dormelletto, according to Sky Tg 24.
