Elon Musk to visit China for first time in 3 years

30.05.2023

Elon Musk, Tesla's chief executive officer, is scheduled to visit China for the first time in three years, marking his first trip to the country. The visit comes shortly after Musk's team held discussions with Indian officials, fuelling speculation about Tesla's expansion plans. Musk will meet with Chinese officials and tour Tesla's Shanghai plant, Reuters reported. The exact itinerary of Musk's visit is not yet known.

Following the United States, Tesla is the second-largest market, with the company's Shanghai plant serving as its largest production hub for electric vehicles. The presence of Musk is significant as Tesla faces increasing competition from Chinese automakers exporting their locally-manufactured electric vehicles. The weak demand in the world's largest auto market has heightened this competition.

Despite the obstacles, Tesla has not provided updates on its plans to boost output by 450,000 vehicles annually at its Shanghai plant. In April, the energy storage company announced its plans to build a factory in Shanghai in order to produce Megapack energy storage products. Tesla has also submitted suggestions for expanding the powertrain production capacity at the Shanghai plant by 1.75 million units per year.

Musk acknowledged some limitations to expanding in China during an interview with CNBC, saying that the constraints were not due to a lack of demand but rather other factors.

In a different development, Tesla is expected to announce the location of its new factory by the end of this year. In a recent interview with the WSJ, Elon Musk expressed his excitement for India when asked if he found the country interesting. India's IT Minister, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, echoed this sentiment, stating that Tesla is serious about establishing a manufacturing base in the country. The statements fit well with Tesla's recent interactions with the Indian government, suggesting the possibility of a new electric vehicle project.
