Poland to raise minimum wage next year due to inflation

01.06.2023

The minimum wage will be significantly increased in Poland next year as the country grapples with inflation, family and social policy ministers say.

From January 2023, the minimum wage went up to PLN 3,490 EUR 770 from PLN 3,010 EUR 664 to be followed by another hike to PLN 3,600 EUR 794 from July 1, 2023.

The minimum hourly rate has also been raised by PLN 19.60 Euro 4.33, effective January 1 and PLN 23.50 Euro 5.19 as of July 1.

Marlena Malag, spokeswoman for PAP, said next year's minimum wage will be above PLN 4,200 EUR 927 due to high inflation.

It will be set on two dates - January 1 and July 1, she said.

Malag said that the rationale behind the decision for such a significant rise was a logical one. The goal of the program is to ensure that Poles who earn below the minimum wage have the opportunity to live with dignity. It also said about 3 million people in Poland receive the minimum wage.

If the average inflation in the previous year exceeds 5 percent, the government is legally obligated to raise the minimum wage twice a year.

By June 15 the Council of Ministers must submit a proposal for the minimum wage and minimum hourly rate for next year to the Social Dialogue Council, an advisory body consisting of government, trade unions and employers.
