China's state-owned power generator begins operations at Asia's largest carbon capture facility

02.06.2023

BEIJING Chinese state-owned power generator China Energy Investment Corporation has begun operations at Asia's largest coal-linked carbon capture, utilisation and storage facility, according to a report in state media outlet CCTV on Friday.

The facility, adjoined to Taizhou thermal coal power plant in the eastern Jiangsu province, has a annual capacity to store 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

China's main power generators are aiming to achieve their goal of reaching their carbon emissions peak by 2030, with carbon captured as a key focus. Last year, state-owned oil and gas giant Sinopec launched a 712,000-tonne-per-year CCUS project at one of its oil refineries in Shandong province.

China has around 40 demonstrators under construction and has a total annual captured capacity of around 3 million tonnes per year, the report said.
