08.06.2023

The Egyptian state oil firm was able to read emails from organisers of the COP 28 climate summit on Wednesday, the Guardian newspaper reported on Wednesday in a fresh embarrassment for the gathering's hosts.

The British newspaper reported that the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company Adnoc, which CEO Sultan Al Jaber is president of the November summit, wasconsulted on how to respond to journalist requests.

The United Arab Emirates has criticized the United Arab Emirates for appointing Jaber to the United Nations summit, where delegates will discuss how to control climate change, including how fossil fuel carbon emissions are driving global warming.

The US and EU lawmakers and campaigners have called for Al Jaber to step down from the role, citing a conflict of interest.

Expert technical analysis revealed that the COP 28 office shares email servers with Adnoc, the Guardian reported.

The newspaper said it detected the link after it requested comment from the COP 28 office in mid-May, without mentioning Adnoc, about criticism of Al Jaber and received a reply marked Adnoc classification: internal.

The COP 28 office had earlier claimed to have used separate computer servers from Adnoc, but the newspaper said expert technical analysis of the emails showed that the company had sent and received emails from the COP 28 office.

Al Jaber'sJaber's aides and the UN's climate body, the UNFCCC, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
