TSMC's Kumamoto Plant Spurs Growth and Preparations for Foreign Influx

10.03.2024

In anticipation of the opening of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (TSMC) plant in Kikuyo, Kumamoto Prefecture, local businesses and organizations are preparing for an influx of foreign newcomers. Kumamoto Driving School has established an "international" division to cater to the diverse nationalities of students, including those from Taiwan. The school has seen a surge in Taiwanese students since TSMC announced its plans for the factory.

To address the projected population growth, a new station will be built along the JR Hohi Line in Kikuyo, just 1.3 kilometers from Sanrigi Station. Kyushu Lutheran School is also opening an international educational institute for elementary school children in response to the expected arrival of overseas parents with younger children.

The demand for housing in the Kikuyo area has skyrocketed, leading to the construction of new apartments and homes. Real estate agencies have reported a significant increase in demand, with monthly rents for new single-bedroom apartments rising by at least 10,000 yen.

The economic impact of TSMC's expansion is already being felt in Kumamoto Prefecture. A group of Taiwanese entrepreneurs is planning to create a "Taiwan town" in the city's urban center, while Taiwan's CTBC Financial Holding Co. has opened a branch of Tokyo Star Bank Ltd. in Kumamoto. The bank's head expressed confidence in the future growth of Kumamoto, citing the influx of TSMC employees and companies in its supply chain.
