Elon Musk hints at thawing of relations with Apple

30.11.2022

Tesla Inc. TSLA, Chief Executive Elon Musk, has bashed Apple Inc. policies this week, but the newly minted Twitter owner has hinted at a thawing of relations Wednesday afternoon.

Musk posted a video of a short but calm scene on the smartphone giant's Cupertino, Calif. campus with a message thanking Apple AAPL, CEO Tim Cook for showing him around. The tweet was identified as being posted via Twitter for iPhone. The messaging was a departure from his more heated approach earlier in the week. He said on Monday that Apple had mostly stopped advertising on Twitter and questioned whether those making decisions at Apple hate free speech in America. He also suggested that Apple was censoring content, posted a poll asking whether people wanted Apple to publish all of its actions that affect its customers, and said that Apple threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store without giving a reason and griped about the cut Apple takes on in-app purchases made through its devices.

Musk sparked questions at the time about whether Apple would actually yank Twitter from the App Store, and whether Musk planned to dive even deeper into a battle with the largest public company in the U.S.

He wouldn't be the first to take issue with Apple's take rate on in-app purchases. Epic Games, maker of Fortnite, has gone to court arguing that the App Store is in violation of antitrust laws. Match Group Inc. MTCH, and Spotify Technology SA SPOT are among others that have voiced complaints.
