Don't reveal plans to leave Poland out of EU, says opposition leader

24.03.2023

Donald Tusk, the leader of Civic Platform, Poland's largest opposition grouping, accused the ruling Law and Justice Party PiS of wanting to take Poland out of the European Union, saying that many of the country's leaders are anti-European.

Tusk made a statement during a meeting on Friday with teachers in the southern town of Siemianowice Slaskie.

Attacking PiS, Tusk said that when it comes to the EU, some of its ruling elites stand sideways and some of them have their backs turned to Europe. But generally, no one in PiS will say they want Poland to leave the EU. He added that they use such slippery words. Yes to the EU, but not as it is, we do not want to leave, but it is supposed to be a loose union of nation states'', Tusk said.

He argued that these spells were used to hide the fact that the majority of the ruling class is anti-European. Tusk warned that people who will not reveal their intentions to take Poland out of the EU will be ruled soon by people who will make no secret of their intention to take Poland out of the EU.

The far-right party in the PAP Confederation is also growing stronger. He said that it can be a serious political force to form a government with PiS, and that five slogans promoted by the party included Poland without gays, Poland without abortion, Poland without taxes and Poland without the EU.

He said that it depends on our efforts whether or not we will protect Poland from the rule of already overt misogynists who despise women, xenophobes who are no longer sceptical but contemptuous and aggressive, and people who do not hide the fact that their political goal is to lead Poland out of the EU.

Tusk's opinion is due to stupidity, lack of imagination and bad will of far-right politicians. We can find ourselves outside the EU. He argued that this is a realistic prospect.
