Pakistan President Alvi appoints lieutenant general Asim Munir as army chief

The media wing of the President's Secretariat said that the AFP ISLAMABAD-Pakistani President Arif Alvi has appointed lieutenant general Asim Munir as the country's new chief of army staff.

The president promoted Munir to the rank of general with immediate effect, who will take office as the new army chief from Nov 29, 2022, according to the statement.

Munir would replace the outgoing Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa who will retire on November 29.

Alvi also appointed Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, who was promoted to the rank of General with immediate effect, as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee with effect from Nov 27, according to the statement.
