Chinese Premier Li Qiang calls for better economic operations

PHOTO XINHUA BEIJING Premier Li Qiang pledged on Friday to push for better economic operations and call for all those with a role in promoting the nation's economic performance to fully and faithfully implement the decisions of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

Li spoke at the first plenary meeting of the State Council, the nation's Cabinet, after he was appointed premier at the first session of the 14th National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

Li said that the five-year term of the incumbent government is a good starting point for building China into a modern socialist country in all respects. The main task is to implement and follow the decisions of the CPC Central Committee, urging each and every official to be people of action. He said that the priority of this year's work was to focus on high-quality development, maintain stability and improve the overall economy in a persistent manner.

He said that he believes that reform and opening-up and effective prevention and defuse major risks should be made as well as an increase in the construction of a modern industrial system.

Li called for all-out efforts to promote the development of agriculture and rural areas, to improve ecological conservation and to raise the people's sense of fulfillment, happiness and security.

He advocated for a strengthening of governance capacity, underscoring the importance of maintaining political integrity and a down-to- earth work style.

The premier also called for institutional reform, adhering to law-based administration, and improving innovation capacity and administrative efficiency.
