NAGOYA -- Two young twin boys who died after falling from the seventh floor of an apartment building in this central Japan city may have climbed a shelf near the window and unlocked it on their own before their fall, an investigative source revealed on March 26.

Aichi Prefectural Police Station's Naka Police Station is looking into details on the background of the 2 year-old boys' fall from the apartment in Nagoya's Naka Ward.

According to the source, there were about 80 centimeters between the room's floor and the window frame, and a shelf around the same height was placed near the right side of the window, when viewing it from the interior of the room.

The window was a sliding panel with two panels, and while the right panel was fixed so it would not open, the left panel did not have a stopper attached. The boys may have moved by holding the handrail for preventing falls or by other means before falling from the left side of the window, after climbing the shelf near the right side of the window, according to the source.

The mother said I remember locking the window, but they were gone after I took my eyes off of them for a while. She said that they were active children. It is possible that the twins unlocked the window on their own, and investigators examined whether there were traces of them touching the area near the lock.

The brothers, Toya and Yuya Mabe, were found collapsed in a parking lot next to the apartment building on March 24.
