Livent says fire breaks out at lithium plant in North Carolina

Livent Corporation LTHM said a fire broke out at the company's 800-acre manufacturing facility in Bessemer City, North Carolina, early Monday.

The fire was limited to one building, and no toxic compounds were burned. The manufacturing of solid lithium metal ingots is done in the building.

The company said there were no injuries in the incident, adding that all on-site personnel are safe and have been evacuated.

Livent said its emergency response team is working to contain the fire and let it burn out.

Apart from smoke, there is currently no immediate risk to the local community, and no local evacuations have been ordered at this time. The portion of highway 161 that runs adjacent to the plant has been temporarily closed. Livent said it is still investigating the cause of the fire.
