Japan’s summer travel plans to reach pre-pandemic level

The number of people who plan to visit Japan during the summer vacation period, July 15 - August 31, is predicted to reach 72.5 million, up 16.9 from last year, according to a survey of this summer s travel plans by major travel agency JTB Corp. This would reach the pre-pandemic level of 2019.

The average amount spent per domestic trip is expected to skyrocket to 40,000, the highest level since 2000, when comparisons were possible. The increasing demand for hotel accommodation costs is considered to be a significant contributor to the increase in hotel accommodation costs. As for travel duration, the respondents who plan to travel for three days and two nights accounted for 36.2%, while those who plan to travel for two days and one night accounted for 32.6%.

The number of people who plan to travel abroad is expected to reach 1.2 million by the end of the year. It is more than double the previous year, but still 40 percent of the 2019 number. JTB expects the number of international flights to recover, and the weak yen and high prices have placed a heavy burden on Japanese travelers. South Korea and Taiwan, close to Japan, are popular destinations, showing a preference for reducing travel expenses.
