Elon Musk unveils new AI startup that aims to understand the universe

Elon Musk of Tesla unveils his new AI startup with a team of top researchers but a broad scope.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, speaks at the SATELLITE Conference and Exhibition in Washington on March 9, 2020. Musk is finally talking about the AI company that he founded to compete with ChatGPT, which is based in Silicon Valley. Elon Musk is finally coming to talk about the artificial intelligence company he founded to compete with ChatGPT-makers OpenAI.

XAI, a startup that launched on Wednesday, is aiming to understand the true nature of the universe. It hasn't said much more.

The new startup based in the San Francisco Bay Area has hired a number of top AI researchers who formerly worked at OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Tesla.

It will be independent of Twitter's new parent company, X Corp., but will work closely with that company and Tesla to make progress towards our mission, the statement said.

Musk, who was a co-founder and early investor of OpenAI, split with the research laboratory in San Francisco a few years ago. He's increasingly critical of OpenAI for its global reach and commercial success with ChatGPT last year and consolidated its financial ties with Microsoft.

The public unveiling of xAI follows comments Musk made to former Fox News host Tucker Carlson in April.

Musk reportedly told Carlson that OpenAI's popular chatbot had a liberal bias, and he planned an alternative that would be a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe. Musk's long-voiced worries about a future in which AI systems could present an existential danger to humanity were reflected in the creation of the startup.

The idea, Musk said, is that an AI that wants to understand humanity is less likely to destroy it.

Musk was among the leading tech leaders who earlier this year called for AI developers to agree to a six-month pause before building systems more powerful than OpenAI's latest model, GPT - 4. He had already been working to start his own AI company, according to Nevada business records.
