Centre Establishes Tribunal to Assess Legality of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party

In a recent development, the Indian government has formed a tribunal, led by Delhi High Court judge Sachin Datta, to examine the possibility of declaring the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party as an unlawful association. This decision comes after the Ministry of Home Affairs pronounced the party as unlawful earlier this month, citing its alleged anti-India and pro-Pakistan activities. The party, founded in 1998 by imprisoned separatist Shabir Ahmad Shah, was previously affiliated with the Hurriyat Conference before becoming a part of the hardline faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Shah, currently detained in Delhi's Tihar Jail, has faced multiple legal cases, including charges of money laundering and terror funding. Furthermore, the Enforcement Directorate had previously seized Shah's house in Srinagar as part of an investigation into his alleged involvement in fueling terrorist acts.
