DGCA Lifts June 1 Deadline for New Pilot Rest Norms Implementation

The DGCA decided to lift the June 1 deadline for the implementation of the new pilot rest norms. These norms were designed to ensure that pilots have adequate rest, ultimately enhancing safety and decreasing the likelihood of accidents. The updated FDTL norms, put in place in January, extended the rest time for pilots, aiming to address concerns related to pilot fatigue and its implications on flight safety.

In response to the request made by the Federation of Indian Airlines, comprising major airlines like IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet, the DGCA took the decision to extend the deadline. The airlines had communicated their challenges in meeting the requirements of the new norms, stating that they would need a considerable increase in the number of pilots, which could lead to flight cancellations if not given more time. By allowing airlines to adhere to the old FDTL norms for now, the regulator recognizes the practical difficulties faced by airlines in recruiting and training additional pilots within the original timeframe.
