Kisii Deputy Governor Impeached by Senate Over Corruption Allegations

Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda faced serious allegations that resulted in his impeachment by the Senate. One of the accusations against him was that he allegedly accepted an Esh. 800,000 bribe to secure a job for someone at the Gusii Water and Sanitation Company. Additionally, he was accused of involvement in the arrest of his brother for cutting down trees on their family land.

During the Senate proceedings, Monda's defense was challenged, with many senators questioning his ability to hold public office. The voting overwhelmingly favored upholding all four charges brought against the Deputy Governor, leading to his removal from office. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the decision as per the Constitution, relieving Monda of his duties.

The impeachment process highlighted ethical concerns, as it was revealed that Monda had attempted to influence the hiring process at the water company by sending money to the managing director. Despite his defense claiming an error in the transaction, senators remained unconvinced of his innocence. The Senate debated the importance of upholding the integrity of public office and the impact of corruption on society, emphasizing the need for accountability and ethical conduct in leadership roles.
