Karatina Hotels Closed Amidst Crackdown, Senator Alleges Selective Enforcement

In Karatina town, Nyeri, five upscale hotels were shuttered on Wednesday following a government crackdown on alcoholism. The closures came a day after President William Ruto's visit to the county, where he emphasized the government's commitment to combating substance abuse.

The affected establishments include Hotel Starbucks, Omega Gardens, Oldoiyo Hotel, The Big Club, and Ibis Hotel. Additionally, Seven Eleven Lounge and Derby Place were closed due to their proximity to churches, schools, and residential areas.

Over the past three weeks, the government has intensified its efforts to curb liquor sales and consumption in the constituency, which is Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's hometown. More than 400 bars have been closed due to their proximity to educational and religious institutions.

However, Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga has alleged that the government is applying the new regulations selectively, claiming that Mathira is being unfairly targeted by "overzealous" national government administrative officers. Wamatinga questioned why local administrators have ignored a court order allowing operators to resume business after successfully challenging the government's withdrawal of their liquor licenses.

Nyeri County Commissioner Pius Murugu has denied allegations of selective law enforcement.
