Muslim Sculptor Bridges Faiths in Lakshadweep, Creating Harmony Through Art

## A Muslim Sculptor Fosters Religious Harmony in Lakshadweep

In a heartwarming display of religious harmony, a Muslim former serviceman named PP Cheriyakoya has sculpted idols of Hindu gods for soldiers stationed in Lakshadweep. Despite being a Muslim himself, Cheriyakoya readily agreed to the requests of the soldiers, creating idols of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh for them to worship.

Cheriyakoya's artistic journey began with his father, who was a skilled carver. Cheriyakoya learned the craft by observing his father and developed a deep passion for it. He went on to become a professional artist and art teacher, even serving as a war veteran in the 1971 war.

In the 1970s, Cheriyakoya received a request from the Madhya Pradesh special force stationed in Andhroth island to sculpt an idol of Lord Hanuman. He gladly accepted and created the idol, allowing the soldiers to practice their faith. Similarly, he sculpted an idol of Lord Ganesh for the Kavaratti temple after receiving a request.

Cheriyakoya's contributions have been lauded by many, including Shailendra Singh Parihar, special secretary of the Lakshadweep administration. Parihar acknowledges Cheriyakoya's role in promoting religious harmony on the island, where people of all faiths coexist peacefully.

The priest of the Kavaratti temple, Chitranjan Mishra, also expressed his gratitude to Cheriyakoya for his dedication. Mishra, who volunteers as a priest while serving in the Indian Reserve Battalion Force, highlighted the importance of Cheriyakoya's contribution in providing the temple with idols despite the absence of a professional sculptor.

Cheriyakoya's story is a testament to the power of interfaith understanding and respect. His willingness to create idols for a different religion demonstrates his commitment to fostering a harmonious environment where everyone feels welcome to practice their faith.
