Ministry of Power Extends Deadline for Thermal Plants Amid Projected Record High Power Demand

The Ministry of Power has instructed 15 imported coal-based thermal power projects to continue operating at full capacity until October 15, 2024, in anticipation of a peak power demand of 260 GW during the summer season. The extension aimed to mitigate potential electricity shortages and maintain stability in power supply as peak power demand had previously reached an all-time high of 243 GW in September 2023.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted above-normal maximum temperatures across various regions of India during the upcoming summer. In response to this, the Ministry of Power decided to extend the deadline for thermal plants utilizing imported coal to ensure uninterrupted electricity production and meet the soaring demand.

The directive issued by the ministry sought to secure the steady operation of 15 imported coal-based power plants, including facilities owned by companies like Tata Power, Adani Power, Essar Power, and JSW, among others. By mandating these plants to run at full capacity and encouraging the blending of imported coal with domestic fuel, the ministry aimed to alleviate pressure on domestic coal supply and guarantee power availability during periods of heightened demand. Moreover, provisions were outlined to pass through the higher cost of imported coal and facilitate the sale of excess power in exchanges as part of ensuring a stable and sufficient electricity supply.
