Sonowal to Contest 2024 Lok Sabha Polls from Dibrugarh

Sarbananda Sonowal, who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2016 to 2021, is making a political comeback by contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Dibrugarh. The BJP has decided to field Sonowal in place of its two-term incumbent MP, Rameswar Teli, for this constituency.

The Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat is witnessing a competitive race, with Sonowal facing opposition from Lurinjyoti Gogoi of the Assam Jatiya Parishad and Manoj Dhanowar of the Aam Aadmi Party. Gogoi, known for his involvement in anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in Assam, is highlighting concerns about the CAA and its impact on indigenous tribes, while Sonowal is emphasizing the developmental achievements under BJP rule.

Dibrugarh, known for its abundant tea gardens and as a hub for oil and gas industries, has a diverse electorate comprising various ethnic groups. Gogoi's alliance with the Congress and focus on indigenous concerns contrasts with Sonowal's portrayal of BJP-led development in the state and at the national level. The upcoming elections in Dibrugarh will be crucial in determining the representation of this diverse constituency in the Indian Parliament.
