Pakistan Bans Elon Musk-Owned Social Media Platform X as Twitter

Following allegations made by former Rawalpindi commissioner Liaquat Chattha against top officials in Pakistan, the government decided to ban the popular social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, on February 17. The ban was enforced based on reports from intelligence agencies, prompting legal disputes and social discourse within the country. Despite the ban, X's Global Government Affairs team stated that they are in communication with Pakistani authorities to address the reasons for the ban and work towards a resolution.

Legal actions against the ban have ensued, with journalist Ehtisham Abbasi petitioning the Islamabad High Court (IHC) over the disruption in access to X. The Interior Ministry, represented by Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, reported to the IHC about Twitter/X's alleged failure to comply with government directives, leading to the ban being imposed. Additionally, the Sindh High Court has demanded a response from the Interior Ministry by May 9 regarding the ban and ordered the rescinding of the initial letter that enforced the ban within a week.

The ban on X has sparked controversy among rights organizations, journalists, and internet service providers in Pakistan. While condemning the ban, these groups have highlighted concerns about freedom of expression and financial losses incurred due to disruptions in service. The situation remains complex as legal battles and public criticisms continue to unfold amidst the ban on the social media platform.
