Toondah Harbour Development Proposal Withdrawn After Environmental Concerns

## Toondah Harbour Development Proposal Withdrawn

The controversial Toondah Harbour development proposal, which included plans for 3,000 apartments, a marina, and a hotel, has been withdrawn by Walker Corporation. This decision comes after the federal environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, indicated she would reject the proposal due to its unacceptable impact on the protected wetland.

Plibersek's interim decision highlighted the detrimental effects the project would have on the internationally protected wetland, including the removal of 58.7 hectares of land and the disruption of threatened and migratory animals.

Walker Corporation, in their statement, acknowledged the minister's concerns and stated that they would use this time to consider the government's report and explore alternative proposals.

Plibersek, however, expressed disappointment that the project had progressed this far, stating that it should have been stopped earlier by the then-environment minister, Josh Frydenberg.

The withdrawal of the proposal has been met with mixed reactions. While some, like Greens MP Michael Berkman, see it as a victory for the community and the environment, others, like Redland City Council, remain committed to seeking private investment for the area's development.

Environmental groups like the Australian Conservation Foundation view this as a significant win for nature and people, emphasizing the need for stronger environmental laws to prevent similar proposals in the future.
