Japan Upgrades Airports and Seaports for Defense, Prioritizing Nansei Islands

## Japan Upgrades Airports and Seaports for Defense

Japan is upgrading five airports and 11 seaports for use by the Self-Defense Forces and the Japan Coast Guard to strengthen national defense. These facilities, designated on April 1, 2023, are located in seven prefectures across the country.

The upgrades, costing 37 billion yen ($244 million), will extend runways and improve berths for SDF and JCG aircraft and vessels. During normal times, the facilities will be used for training, transportation, evacuation, and disaster response.

The government prioritized facilities in the Nansei Islands, including Okinawa, due to concerns over a potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait. Ishigaki Mayor welcomed the designation of Ishigaki Port, while concerns remain in Kagoshima and Okinawa regarding joint use with the US military.

Professor Sado criticized the government's unilateral approach and lack of explanation to local communities. He also expressed concerns about protecting and evacuating people in emergencies.
