NHTSA Investigation Escalates, Potential Recall Looms

## Honda's Automatic Braking System Under Investigation by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating Honda's automatic emergency braking system, which has been linked to unexpected braking incidents in nearly 3 million vehicles. The investigation, which began in February 2022, has been upgraded to an engineering analysis, the final step before a potential recall.

The investigation stems from 1,294 complaints, primarily from consumers and Honda itself, alleging that the system can brake the vehicles without any objects in their path, increasing the risk of a crash. The agency has received 47 reports of crashes and 112 reports of injuries related to the issue.

The investigation covers two of Honda's top-selling models, the CR-V and the Accord, for model years 2017-2022 (CR-V) and 2018-2022 (Accord). While Honda claims some customers may not fully understand the system's limitations, consumers report that dealerships were unable to reproduce the problem and dismissed it as normal behavior.

Honda has stated that they will continue to cooperate with NHTSA's investigation and conduct their own internal review. NHTSA will assess the frequency and potential safety consequences of the issue.

This investigation is part of a broader effort by NHTSA to examine the performance of automatic braking systems, which are increasingly common in new vehicles. The agency is working on regulations to require these systems on all new vehicles and establish standards for their performance.
