Train Strike Threat Looms Over Adelaide's AFL Showdown

## Train Strike Threatens to Disrupt AFL Showdown

Commuters attending the AFL Showdown between Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows on May 2nd could face major disruptions as train drivers threaten a 24-hour strike. The Rail, Tram, and Bus Union (RTBU) has notified private rail operator Keolis Downer Adelaide (KDA) of the planned stoppage due to an ongoing pay dispute.

The union is demanding a 20% pay rise over four years, while KDA is offering 14.7%. Union secretary Darren Phillips expressed concern for footy fans who may be impacted but emphasized the frustration of railway workers facing rising living costs. He hopes to avoid the strike through further negotiations with KDA.

KDA expressed disappointment over the proposed industrial action on the Showdown date and remains committed to reaching a mutually agreeable solution. The state government has been contacted for comment.

This latest threat follows a series of work stoppages in recent weeks, including the unavailability of Footy Express trains on Friday night and peak-hour service closures on Tuesday and Wednesday. Another potential rush-hour stoppage is planned for May 7th between 6am and 8am.

The current situation stems from the privatization of Adelaide's tram and train services in 2021 by the former Liberal government. The Labor government subsequently signed a deal with KDA to hand back train operations by 2025.
