BJP Alleges AAP Corruption, Promises Removal Within a Year

A fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site in New Delhi on Sunday, April 21, 2024. Thick plumes of smoke continued to rise from the site on Monday, hours after the major fire.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva visited the landfill on Monday and accused the AAP government of corruption. He claimed that the garbage dump was a direct example of their mismanagement and promised that the BJP would remove it within a year of coming to power in Delhi.

Sachdeva criticized the AAP government for failing to fulfill its promise of clearing the landfill by December 31, 2023. He pointed out that the mountain of garbage continues to grow, posing a serious health and environmental hazard.

The Delhi Fire Service attributed the fire to gases produced in the massive waste pile. Sachdeva questioned the lack of functional machines at the landfill and accused the MCD of corruption.

No immediate reaction was available from the Aam Aadmi Party over Sachdeva's allegations.

The Ghazipur landfill has been a source of concern for years. In 2019, its height reached 65 meters, only eight meters less than the Qutub Minar. In 2017, a portion of the garbage collapsed onto an adjacent road, killing two people. Three fire incidents were reported at the landfill in 2022, one of which took over 50 hours to extinguish.

The ongoing fire and Sachdeva's accusations highlight the urgency of addressing the Ghazipur landfill issue. It remains to be seen whether the BJP will be able to fulfill its promise of removing the landfill within a year if they come to power in Delhi.
