Microbiologist Dr Yazdi Maneksha Italia Conferred with Padma Shri Award

Microbiologist Dr Yazdi Maneksha Italia, recognized for his pioneering work in establishing India's first sickle cell anemia control program in Gujarat, was recently awarded the prestigious Padma Shri. Dr Italia was one of the key contributors to the counseling modules on sickle cell disease initiated by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with the ambitious goal of eliminating Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2047. In an interview following the award ceremony, Dr Italia emphasized that the recognition was for his work in tackling sickle cell anemia, particularly within tribal communities where the disease is prevalent.

At the Civil Investiture Ceremony-I held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Droupadi Murmu honored individuals with 3 Padma Vibhushan, 8 Padma Bhushan, and 55 Padma Shri Awards. Among the awardees were six individuals from Gujarat, including noted interventional cardiologist Dr Tejas Patel. This recognition underscores the significant achievements and contributions made by individuals across various fields where public service plays a crucial role.

The Padma Awards, which are presented in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri - aim to acknowledge exceptional service and distinguished achievements in diverse fields. The awards committee, chaired by the Cabinet Secretary and comprising eminent members, recommends recipients for the Padma Awards annually. The ceremony was attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other dignitaries, showcasing the significance of the recognition event.
