West Bengal Congress Chief Accuses Police of Harassment, Seeks Election Commission Intervention

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury Accuses Police of Harassment in West Bengal

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the West Bengal Congress chief and Baharampur Lok Sabha seat candidate, has accused two police officers in Baharampur of harassing Congress workers. In a letter to Chief Election Commission Rajiv Kumar, Chowdhury alleged that the officers are implicating party workers on false and frivolous charges with the intention of affecting the party's prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Chowdhury, in his two-page letter, detailed several incidents where Congress workers were allegedly harassed and implicated in false cases. He claimed that these actions were "systematically planned" to demoralize party workers and hinder his election campaign.

"I am writing to bring to your attention and seek your immediate intervention to put an end to the blatant acts of misuse of the law by the law enforcement agencies themselves in implicating persons affiliated to the Congress on false and frivolous charges with the obvious intention to mar the party's electoral prospects," Chowdhury wrote in the letter.

He further stated that these actions were a blatant misuse of power and aimed at influencing the outcome of the elections. Chowdhury urged the Election Commission to take immediate action and replace the officers responsible for the harassment.

Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha, is seeking a sixth straight term from the Baharampur seat. He is facing a tough challenge from cricketer-turned-politician Yusuf Pathan of the Trinamool Congress. The upcoming Lok Sabha elections are crucial for both parties, and the allegations of police harassment have added another layer of complexity to the already heated campaign.

The Election Commission is yet to respond to Chowdhury's letter. It remains to be seen what action, if any, the commission will take in response to these serious allegations.
