In the backyard of his North Queensland home, Keith Payne cultivates rows of fiery chillies. While he doesn't eat them himself, he generously shares them with the local south-east Asian community at the Mackay markets. Mr. Payne, now 90, is the last living Vietnam War recipient of the prestigious Victoria Cross, awarded for his extraordinary bravery during the Battle of Ben Het in 1969. Despite being injured himself, he saved the lives of 40 wounded soldiers under enemy attack.
The horrors of war left their mark on Mr. Payne, who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) upon returning home. He credits his 70-year marriage to Florence for helping him cope with the challenges of PTSD.
