Vietnamese Tourists Using Ride-Sharing Services Boosts Taxi Industry in Kyoto

In Kyoto, the recent introduction of a ride-sharing service has sparked significant interest from taxi operators, with 90 registered in the first two weeks post-launch. The service has primarily been utilized by foreign tourists, leading to taxi companies increasing their workforce to cater to the growing demand and potential expansion of the service.

One local taxi company, MK Co., experienced a surge in ride-sharing reservations, particularly from foreign visitors familiar with such services in their home countries. Unlike traditional ride-sharing models like Uber, the Japanese system requires drivers to be employed by licensed taxi companies, a regulatory measure to address industry opposition and safety concerns.

Since its inception, MK Co. has witnessed a positive response, prompting the deployment of 20 ride-sharing cars and receiving 110 reservations within a limited operating window. Despite reservations from domestic users about the new service's benefits and safety, businesses like MK Co. are adapting by recruiting more drivers to meet the increasing demand for ride-sharing services. Additionally, Go Inc., Japan's leading ride-hailing app operator, has introduced a platform to connect aspiring ride-sharing drivers with taxi companies, attracting numerous applications, predominantly from experienced male drivers.
