Over 500 People Relocated After Land Sinking in Jammu and Kashmir Village

Over 500 residents have been relocated to safer areas as a result of a devastating incident that occurred in a village in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir. This unfortunate event led to the complete destruction of 58 houses, prompting swift actions from the district administration to provide shelter to those affected. An official mentioned that the assessment of damages caused by the land subsidence in Pernote village has commenced promptly to ensure that the affected families can receive compensation in accordance with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) regulations.

This natural calamity struck the village on Thursday evening, causing not only significant damage to residential structures but also impacting essential infrastructure such as transmission towers, a power station, and a section of the road connecting Gool sub-division with the Ramban district headquarters. The Deputy Commissioner, Baseer-Ul-Haq Chaudhary, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), spearheaded the relocation efforts of all affected families to provide necessary assistance and support during this challenging time.

Efforts to facilitate restoration in the affected village are underway, with teams from Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited and Sub-Trans sub-Division deployed to address the disrupted power supply. The district administration, along with various relief organizations and authorities like the police, national and state disaster response forces, civil volunteers, and others, have collaborated to ensure efficient rescue operations. Additionally, a health camp with dedicated medical staff has been established to cater to the healthcare needs of the displaced individuals, emphasizing the importance of maintaining sanitation standards in health camps and relocation sites.

To expedite the process of compensation disbursement to victims, various departments including revenue, horticulture, sheep husbandry, animal husbandry, agriculture, rural development, roads, and buildings have been tasked with assessing the damages caused by the land sinking. In a bid to prevent future disasters of this nature, the National Conference (NC) has called upon the Center to dispatch a team of experts to assess the situation and implement preventive measures in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir.
