Raising Awareness and Promoting Liver Health

World Liver Day, celebrated annually on April 19th, aims to raise awareness about liver-related issues and diseases. This crucial organ plays a vital role in immunity, digestion, and metabolism. Any liver illness can significantly impact not only the digestive system but also the kidneys, lungs, heart, and brain.

Excessive fat accumulation in the liver can also lead to health problems. Common symptoms of liver disease include loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice, and weight loss. World Liver Day encourages everyone to adopt a healthier lifestyle to prevent and manage liver-related conditions.

The theme for World Liver Day 2024 is "Keep your liver healthy and disease-free." This year's theme emphasizes the importance of regular health check-ups to detect and prevent liver disorders early.

The World Health Organization (WHO) established World Liver Day to highlight the burden of liver disease and promote investment in research. It was first officially recognized on April 19, 2012, and has gained increasing recognition since then.

Each year, various health organizations, clinics, and liver treatment institutes organize programs and activities to mark this day.

In 2010, the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) launched the first World Liver Day to commemorate its establishment in 1966. Since then, April 19th has been celebrated annually as World Liver Day.

Studies estimate that around 20 lakh people worldwide die from liver diseases each year, and this number is projected to increase by 35% by 2030.

The alarming rise in liver-related deaths is attributed to a lack of awareness and preventive measures. World Liver Day aims to encourage individuals to adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce calorie intake to support liver function and manage liver diseases.

Simple steps like getting enough sleep, practicing mindfulness to reduce stress, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco can significantly contribute to liver health.

Let's all take this opportunity to prioritize liver health and make conscious choices for a healthier future. Happy World Liver Day!
