Somanath Discusses Private Space Tech and Chandrayaan-4

In a recent interaction with space enthusiasts on Isro's official Instagram page, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman S Somanath discussed the potential of private players in space technology and provided an update on the Chandrayaan-4 mission.

Somanath acknowledged the significant contributions of private companies like SpaceX to space technology and suggested that India could replicate America's approach by encouraging private entities to participate in building rocket engines and exploring human flight vehicles. He emphasized the crucial role these companies play in advancing technology, reducing costs, and making space more accessible.

He also highlighted the importance of government support for private space ventures, citing the example of NASA transferring technology to SpaceX to accelerate their development. Somanath expressed excitement about the progress of Indian private companies like Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos, which have already tested launch vehicles.

Regarding Chandrayaan-4, Somanath shared that the mission is being developed as a continuation of the Chandrayaan series. He reiterated Prime Minister Modi's announcement of India's intention to land on the moon by 2040 and emphasized the need for continuous moon exploration to achieve this goal. Chandrayaan-4 will be the first step towards this objective, aiming to send a craft to the moon, collect samples, and bring them back to Earth.

Somanath concluded the hour-long interaction by promising another session in May. This initiative, titled #asksomnathIsro, was launched on March 2nd and aims to connect with the younger generation and foster their interest in space exploration.
