A Rare Side Effect of Certain Vaccines
Thrombosis Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) is a rare condition that can occur in some individuals following vaccination. It is characterized by the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels, along with a low platelet count. While TTS is a serious condition, it is important to note that it is extremely rare.
Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Co-Chairman of the National Indian Medical Association (IMA) Covid Task Force in Kerala, acknowledges that the Covid vaccines have been instrumental in preventing numerous deaths. However, he also highlights the importance of being aware of rare but potentially serious side effects like TTS.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), adenovirus vector vaccines, such as the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines, have been linked to a small number of TTS cases. The WHO has issued guidance to healthcare providers on the assessment and management of potential TTS cases.
In March 2024, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has conducted a detailed study which shows that the COVID-19 vaccine is not responsible for heart attacks. He emphasized that individual lifestyle factors, such as binge drinking, could be among the underlying causes of heart attacks.

The Covid vaccines have saved countless lives and continue to play a crucial role in protecting individuals from severe illness and death.
