Mitsubishi Electric Corp. recently revealed its latest satellite, Daichi-4, designed to conduct surveillance of Earth's surface using sophisticated radar technology. This cutting-edge satellite is envisioned to play a crucial role in disaster prevention by detecting abnormal changes on the ground and offering insights into areas affected by natural calamities. Demonstrated to the media in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, on March 11, the unveiling showcased the company's commitment to leveraging technological advancements for societal benefit.

Katsuya Sakai, the deputy head of Mitsubishi Electric's Space Systems division, expressed optimism about Daichi-4's potential to enhance safety and security. The satellite, weighing around 3 tons and boasting a span of 20 meters when equipped with extended solar panels and other gear, represents a significant advancement in satellite technology. Developed and produced by Mitsubishi Electric over a span of eight years under an order from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, this satellite is anticipated to offer a broader observation scope than its predecessor, Daichi-2, enabling more frequent and precise data collection.

With a total development cost reaching 32 billion yen ($217 million), including ground facilities, Daichi-4 is marked by its increased monitoring capabilities and improved data-gathering efficiency. The satellite's expanded coverage area and upgraded functionalities will facilitate enhanced observation of various phenomena such as volcanic activities, ground subsidence, and post-disaster reconnaissance. By scrutinizing factors like building damage and flooding extents following catastrophic events, Daichi-4 is poised to play a pivotal role in disaster response and recovery operations.
