Indian Spies Expelled from Australia for Espionage

In 2020, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) uncovered a network of Indian spies operating within Australia. These spies were attempting to steal sensitive information related to defense projects, airport security, and trade relationships. Additionally, they were accused of monitoring the Indian diaspora in Australia and cultivating relationships with current and former politicians.

ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess first alluded to the spy ring in his 2021 annual threat assessment, but did not disclose the country involved. He later confirmed that India's foreign intelligence service was responsible, and several Indian officials were subsequently expelled from Australia by the Morrison government.

The Washington Post also reported that two members of India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) were expelled in 2020 following an ASIO counter-intelligence operation. This incident occurred amidst growing concerns among Western allies regarding the actions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, including an assassination in Canada.

While visiting the United States in November 2023, Mr. Burgess declined to comment on whether India's foreign operations had caused concern for ASIO. He did, however, state that ASIO would take action against any foreign interference or plotting.

Despite being a member of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue alongside the United States, Japan, and Australia, India has been accused of espionage against Australia. Government sources have identified Singapore, South Korea, Israel, and India as friendly nations actively engaged in espionage operations within Australia.

The Indian High Commission and ASIO declined to comment on the "nest of spies" operation.
