Air India Reduces Free Cabin Baggage Allowance for Lowest Economy Fares

Air India, under the ownership of the Tata Group, has recently implemented a reduction in the free cabin baggage allowance for the lowest economy fare segment on domestic flights from 20 kilograms to 15 kilograms. This adjustment is a part of the new menu-based pricing model fare families that were introduced in August to provide varying levels of benefits and fare restrictions at different price points. The airline highlighted the need for a more personalized approach rather than a one-size-fits-all strategy in response to evolving passenger preferences.

As of May 2, the 'Comfort' and 'Comfort Plus' fare families now offer a 15-kilogram baggage allowance, differing from the previous 20 kilograms and 25 kilograms, respectively. Before the concept of fare families, Air India allowed passengers on domestic flights to carry 25 kilograms of cabin baggage without any additional charges. This move aligns Air India with other domestic airlines, which also permit passengers to carry 15 kilograms of cabin baggage at no extra cost.

The rationale behind the introduction of fare families is to provide passengers with the flexibility to select fares and services that align with their needs and preferences. By offering different fare categories such as 'Comfort,' 'Comfort Plus,' and 'Flex,' Air India aims to cater to diverse traveler requirements. For instance, the price disparity between 'Comfort Plus' and 'Flex' fares is typically minimal, with the latter providing additional benefits such as extra baggage allowance and flexibility in changes or cancellations. These changes stem from customer feedback and extensive research conducted by Air India to stay competitive in the aviation market.

Tata Group's acquisition of the struggling Air India in 2022 has initiated an ambitious strategy to revitalize the airline's financial prospects. The implementation of fare families and adjustments in baggage allowances are part of Tata Group's efforts to enhance Air India's competitiveness and appeal to a broader range of passengers with varying preferences and requirements.
