Birnagar Village Faces Devastation After Heavy Rains
Birnagar, a small village nestled near the banks of the Ganga River in Malda, West Bengal, has been left devastated after heavy rains caused the river to overflow. The lack of dams or barrages has exacerbated the situation, leaving the villagers in dire straits.
Many villagers have lost their lives, while others have been forced to relocate due to the relentless flooding. Homes have been torn apart, and the school building is at risk of collapsing. The villagers are understandably frustrated and feel abandoned by the government.
Birju, a resident of Birnagar, expressed his despair. "We don't know what to do. The government isn't helping us. We have no choice but to vote, but we don't want to. Our problems need to be addressed. If we don't have homes, we won't vote," he said.
Another villager, Suresh, echoed Birju's sentiments. "The government doesn't care about us. We live near the river, and they don't do anything to help us. If they don't support us, we won't vote," he stated.
Sriti Sharda, a single mother living in the village, shared her own struggles. "I've lived here for nine years, and I'm a single mother. My house was washed away, and we haven't received any support. I have two children, and I need the government's help," she pleaded.
Sanjay, another villager, highlighted the ongoing problems faced by Birnagar. "This has been happening since 2016. The work isn't done despite the funds. The government makes promises but doesn't deliver. We've lost homes and lives. We won't vote. We just need support to stop losing more," he said.
With the third phase of polling scheduled for May 7, the villagers of Birnagar remain resolute in their stance. They have endured years of hardship and unfulfilled promises, and they refuse to participate in the elections until their pleas are heard and addressed.
