New Design Vision and Challenges Emerge as COX Architecture Takes the Helm

New Architects, New Ideas

The newly appointed architects for Hobart's waterfront stadium, Australian firm COX Architecture, have revealed their initial vision for the project. While it's still early days, they've emphasized their desire to create a design that respects the city's character and engages with the surrounding streetscape.

One of the key concerns addressed by the architects is the stadium's height. They are exploring ways to minimize its visual impact by potentially sinking the structure and lowering its perimeter. This would ensure compliance with height restrictions while maintaining the necessary playing field dimensions for both cricket and football.

The architects are confident they can design the stadium within the allocated budget. They are also working closely with the Macquarie Point Development Corporation to address concerns about the site's suitability. Extensive testing has confirmed the land's stability, and a 3D model of the geotechnical data is being developed.

However, the project faces a significant hurdle in the form of the existing wastewater treatment plant. Relocating this facility to Selfs Point is estimated to cost $314 million, a substantial increase from the initial $140 million estimate. This cost will be borne by Tasmanian taxpayers.

Despite these challenges, the Macquarie Point Development Corporation remains optimistic. They expect to unveil a finalized design for the stadium in June and are committed to delivering a multi-purpose stadium and a vibrant mixed-use precinct by 2028-29, as per the agreement with the AFL.
