Emu Run Tours Faces Millions in Fines Over Fatal Bus Crash

Emu Run Tours Faces Charges in Fatal Bus Crash

Emu Run Tours, along with its owner Patrick Bedford and mechanic Ian Jackson, are facing significant fines over alleged modifications to a bus that crashed and killed one passenger in June 2022.

NT Worksafe alleges that the company and individuals breached the Work Health and Safety Act on 11 occasions in 2022. The investigation claims that the bus was modified to use four wheels instead of its original six, and that the tires fitted after the modifications did not comply with the manufacturer's specifications.

The charges against Mr. Bedford were dropped in September 2022 due to insufficient evidence. However, NT Worksafe continued its investigation and is now pursuing charges.

If found guilty, Emu Run Tours could face fines totaling $5 million, while Mr. Bedford could be fined up to $1 million and Mr. Jackson up to $500,000.

The crash occurred on Larapinta Drive near Hermannsburg, where the bus was carrying 19 passengers and two workers back to Alice Springs. A tire blowout caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the bus rolling over.

A 69-year-old man died at the scene, and a 67-year-old woman was critically injured. Three other women also sustained serious injuries.

Police have described the injuries to the tourists as "significant and life-changing."

The charges allege that Emu Run Tours failed to ensure the safety of passengers and other road users, and that Mr. Bedford breached his duty as an officer, leading to injuries and fatalities. Mr. Jackson is accused of failing to ensure his actions did not endanger others.

Mr. Bedford has been contacted for comment. The matters are scheduled to be heard in Darwin Local Court on July 2, 2024.
